Investigation reveals 862 million tenge embezzlement in uranium plant project.

Anti-Corruption Service has completed an investigation into the former management of LLP "Karatau" (a subsidiary of NAC Kazatomprom), the director of the subcontractor LLP "Iri building", as well as representatives of the author's and technical supervision.

The contractor is suspected of embezzling 862 million tenge allocated for construction and installation works as part of the project to modernize the uranium processing plant at the Karatau mine in the Sozak district of the Turkestan region in the years 2019-2021.

"The embezzlement was committed with the complicity of representatives of the author's and technical supervision and as a result of negligence on the part of the management of LLP "Karatau". The criminal case has been referred to court for consideration. The actual owner of LLP "Iri building" is wanted," the Anti-Corruption Service statement distributed on April 30, 2024, stated.

According to Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, other information in the interests of the investigation is not subject to disclosure.

In Anti-Corruption Service's reminder, within the criminal case against the former Vice-Minister Timur Toktabayev, the state has regained the unique Shevchenkovskoye deposit in the Kostanay region with reserves of nickel (1.075 million tons) and cobalt (585.9 thousand tons). The value of the mineral reserves exceeds 5.6 trillion tenge.
