Appeal Court Revises Sentence for Child Trafficking Convicts in Kazakhstan

in Corruption / Kazakhstan - by

The Court of Appeals has reviewed the verdict of the specialized inter-district court for minors in the region regarding five convicts in Kazakhstan. Previously, a woman was sentenced to eight years in prison for multiple counts of trading minors in a helpless state, as well as fraud. Four others were sentenced to three years, conditionally, for the same charges.

The appeal case was considered based on the appeals of the convicts and their lawyers, who requested the court to overturn the verdict and issue an acquittal. After examining the appeals, the court found no grounds to change or annul the sentence, thus upholding the original verdict.

The court recalled the details of the case involving a pregnant woman conspiring with a couple to sell their child after birth. After receiving the money, the couple took the child. Later, the woman, pregnant again, planned to deceive two other couples by promising to sell them the child but disappeared after taking their money, causing a loss of 2.3 million tenge.

During the same period, the defendant conspired with another couple to sell them a child after birth. The couples transferred money to the pregnant woman before the birth, and after delivery, they took the child, establishing paternity and including their names on the birth certificates.

This case is reminiscent of a similar incident in the Zhetysu region in September 2023, where a 23-year-old woman sold her two children for two million tenge. In October, midwives attempted to sell a newborn for 1.5 million tenge in the Zhambyl region.
