An emergency situation of local natural disaster was declared in Uralsk on March 27. According to the local authorities, the recent flooding has affected 20 residential houses, basements of three social facilities, and five multi-story buildings in the regional center. Over the past week, local call centers have received over a thousand calls.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the flooding, with all communal services actively involved in anti-flooding operations. Water drainage is ongoing, and water pressure in households has been reduced to prevent accidents in the sewage system and flooding of adjacent buildings, as stated by the authorities. The Head of the West Kazakhstan Region, Nariman Turegaliyev, personally inspected the flooded areas in the village of Zachagansk, the water supply system on Saratovskoe Highway, and the streets of the old center of Uralsk.
Turegaliyev instructed relevant authorities to intensify the necessary work, including timely water drainage, sandbag placement, and cleaning of water canals and pipelines. Flood prevention efforts are under strict control, with a special regional headquarters for flood prevention operating around the clock.
Heavy rainfall has been ongoing in the region and the city of Uralsk on March 26-27, 2024, posing a threat of flooding to residential buildings due to the inability of water to seep into frozen ground. Flood prevention operations are being carried out intensively in all districts of the West Kazakhstan Region. Previously, it was reported that the city akimat building was flooded, affecting the ground floor. In response, Nariman Turegaliyev issued a strict reprimand to the Uralsk akim, Mirzhan Satkanov.
