Water Reservoirs in Kazakhstan Reach High Levels as Spring Floods Subside

in News / Kazakhstan - by

The official representative of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Moldir Abdualiyeva, provided an update on the current situation of Kazakhstan's water reservoirs. In the Akmola region, two major reservoirs are at 99% capacity and operating normally after the peak of spring floods has passed. Similarly, in the Aktobe region, two large reservoirs are also at 99% capacity, with water inflow decreasing as the flood peak has already occurred.

Moving to the East Kazakhstan region, the average capacity of five major reservoirs stands at 62%, with all operating normally and expecting the flood peak this week. In the West Kazakhstan region, four large reservoirs are at 65% capacity and operating normally, although the water level in the Chagan River continues to rise. Additionally, a second flood wave is expected along the Zhaiyk River.

Abdualiyeva highlighted that four major reservoirs in the Karaganda region are fully filled, with the flood peak already passed. In the Kostanay region, two large reservoirs are at 96% capacity and experiencing flooding. Meanwhile, in the North Kazakhstan region, two major reservoirs are at full capacity, with the flooding ongoing.

However, a tense situation persists at the Karatomar reservoir, where inflow is at 2425 cubic meters per second and outflow at 2640 cubic meters per second, although there is a gradual decrease in inflow. Authorities are closely monitoring and regulating water flow at the site.

Abdualiyeva emphasized that round-the-clock monitoring is in place at all reservoirs, with hourly assessments of the water situation. Due to the floodwaters in the Tobol and Zhaiyk rivers affecting Russia, Kazakhstan's Minister of Water Resources continues to exchange hydrological data with "Roshydromet" on an hourly basis.
