Financial Monitoring Agency Investigates Dam Break in Western Kazakhstan

in News / Kazakhstan - by

The Financial Monitoring Agency (FMA) is conducting an investigation into the director of a company that was entrusted with managing the Magadzhan Dam in the Khromtau District of the Aktobe Region.

The pre-trial investigation was initiated due to the negligent performance of duties, which led to serious consequences.

"In 2014, the dam was entrusted to a private company for fish farming. However, the company failed to properly maintain and service the dam," the FMA reported.

On April 5, 2024, the Magadzhan Dam reservoir breached, leading to the evacuation of 215 people, including 96 children, from several villages in the Alginsky District.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

On April 4, it was reported that the Prosecutor's Office of the Aktobe Region had initiated a criminal case regarding another dam breach in the Aitekebiy District. Another criminal case related to a dam breach is being investigated in the Almaty Region.
