Kazakhstan's Senior Officer Updates on Flood Situation, Over 111,000 People Rescued

Senior officer of the Committee for Civil Defense and Military Units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan, Yerasyl Saipash, provided an update on the current flood situation in the country during a briefing at the Situation Center on April 15, 2024.

According to the speaker, more than 111,000 people have been rescued since the beginning of the flood period, including 39,000 children. Currently, 6,814 people, including 2,995 children, are housed in temporary accommodation centers, while 11,950 individuals have been able to return home.

Additionally, over 9,050,000 cubic meters of meltwater have been pumped out, and 2,200,000 sandbags and 1,200,000 units of inert material have been laid down as part of the relief efforts.

Saipash highlighted that 33,334 personnel and 4,066 pieces of equipment are involved in the rescue operations. As of now, 5,411 residential buildings, 1,607 courtyard areas, and 2,035 houses in five regions remain flooded. Water has been drained from 2,500 homes and 2,157 courtyard areas. There are 36 local-scale emergencies in eight regions of the country.

The representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations also urged citizens to be extremely cautious, strictly adhere to all safety measures during the flood period, and not leave evacuation centers without proper authorization.

It was previously announced that Kazakh citizens affected by the floods will be granted a deferral for tax and payment obligations.
