The United Nations (UN) issued a statement on April 16, 2024, in response to the enactment of a law criminalizing domestic violence in Kazakhstan. The country's president signed the document the day before.

The UN statement expressed gratitude to Kazakhstan for passing the law, emphasizing its significance in combating all forms of gender-based violence. By introducing criminal liability for domestic violence, Kazakhstan demonstrates a commitment to upholding human rights, particularly in protecting women and children from family violence. This crucial step not only promotes gender equality but also ensures that survivors of domestic violence have access to justice and social support services to rebuild their lives.

The UN urges Kazakhstan to continue efforts in effectively implementing and enforcing this law, including raising awareness about domestic violence, improving data collection and reporting, expanding preventive services, providing access to parenting skills development programs, enhancing the training of law enforcement and judicial personnel, and establishing support mechanisms for victims.

A comprehensive approach is necessary to create a society where everyone can live without fear and violence in their own homes. The UN stands ready to support Kazakhstan in its endeavors to eradicate gender-based violence and promote a culture of respect, equality, and dignity for all its citizens.

The law in Kazakhstan, "On Amending Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Ensuring Women's Rights and Children's Safety," was signed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on April 15, 2024. The document introduces stricter measures to hold individuals accountable for any acts of violence against women and children, aiming to strengthen family institutions and ensure the safety of minors.
