Kazakhstan to Rebuild Homes for Flood Victims, Minister Announces Mechanisms

in News / Kazakhstan - by

The Minister of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan, Kanat Sharlapaev, announced on April 23 the plans for rebuilding homes for Kazakhstani citizens affected by floods. The government has approved two mechanisms in case the damaged homes are deemed unfit for restoration.

According to the minister, the regional authorities will either purchase a new apartment of the victim's choice or construct a new home in coordination with the affected individual. This flexibility aims to expedite the housing provision process. Sharlapaev emphasized the importance of quick solutions, stating that purchasing is faster than rebuilding.

It was highlighted that homes will not be reconstructed in flood-prone areas. New housing will be built in safe locations to prevent recurring flood damages. Sharlapaev explained that supporting reconstruction in flood zones is not viable due to the high risk of repeated disasters.

Funds will be allocated by the regional authorities for repairs after the technical assessment of the homes. The repairs may be compensated monetarily or carried out by construction companies selected by the local executive bodies.

The Minister's statements come in the context of the current flood situation in Kazakhstan, as reported by the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS).
