Embamunaigaz JSC's Rapid Response to Atyrau Region Flooding Crisis

in News / Kazakhstan - by

Preparation of the facilities of Embamunaigaz JSC for operation in the conditions of possible flooding is part of the annual spring plan. This year was no exception.

However, due to the abnormal aggravation of the flooding situation in the Atyrau region during the current period, the usual response schemes to flooding at Embamunaigaz had to be promptly adjusted. At the end of March, an operational headquarters was established within the company to prevent the threat of flooding under the Crisis Management Team, which has been in constant contact with the operational headquarters of the region and districts since day one.

The operational headquarters maintains round-the-clock communication with the local executive authorities of the Atyrau region, including the akimats of Kyzylkoginsky, Zhylloysky, Makhambetsky, Makatsky, and Isataysky districts. In accordance with the declared needs by the akimats, Embamunaigaz promptly provides special equipment, construction and protective materials, tools, personal protective equipment, fuel, and personnel for conducting water protection works.

The team of Embamunaigaz actively participated in clearing water channels and shore strengthening works. Particularly in the Isatay district, with the active involvement of Emba oil workers, works were carried out to strengthen and extend the old dam, open sluices on the Baksay and Naryn canals leading towards the Caspian Sea.

Additionally, the company provided personnel and specialized equipment for the construction of coastal structures in areas identified by the Atyrau regional headquarters for flood prevention. The total length of the protective dam built by Embamunaigaz was 9154 meters, including 2250 meters in the village of Almaly, 5930 meters along the Karaozek canal in the settlement of Saryozek in the city of Atyrau, and 974 meters on the territory of a military unit. An average of 383 company employees and 62 pieces of equipment were involved in these works daily.

It is worth emphasizing the particular importance of strengthening the section along the Saryozek canal, which includes not only the eponymous village with over 500 families and three social facilities but also the area leading to the microdistricts of Nursaya, Samal, and one of the main strategic facilities in the region – the Atyrau International Airport named after K. Dospa.

"As of today, the works in these areas have been completed. We are currently inspecting the quality of the constructed dam and its additional reinforcement with soil-filled bags. In Saryozek, we have installed water level gauges in three locations on the Zhaiyk River. According to the widely used Baltic system of height measurement, the dam level is at minus 21.5-22 meters," said the General Director of Embamunaigaz JSC, Sabit Arynov.

Regarding the production activities of Embamunaigaz, all company facilities are operating normally, meeting industrial safety, subsoil protection, and environmental protection requirements. However, precautionary works have been organized at several fields located in flood-prone areas. Protective structures are being erected, and reinforcement works are being carried out on existing dams.

Furthermore, security measures for personnel, industrial, transportation, and environmental safety have been enhanced. The company has developed an action plan in case of emergencies, aiming to eliminate and minimize risks associated with flooding factors. The plan includes evacuating people to safe areas, preserving and sealing wellheads, pumping out water, providing essential supplies, medications, food, and other necessary measures.
