in News / Kazakhstan - by

Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) of Kazakhstan has provided an update on the situation at the country's reservoirs as of April 29, 2024.

As per the information released on the department's website on April 30, the peak of flooding has passed in four regions of the republic, while in four other regions, high water levels continue.

Flooding Peak Passed

- In Akmola region, Astana and Seletinsk reservoirs are at full capacity, 100%.

- In Aktobe region, the average filling of two large reservoirs is at 97%.

- In Karaganda region, three large reservoirs are at 98.4% capacity.

- In Kostanay region, the average filling of two large reservoirs stands at 92%.

Continuation of High Water Levels

- In West Kazakhstan region, specialists from the branch of "Kazvodkhoz" are ensuring the safe discharge of floodwaters.

- In North Kazakhstan region, two large reservoirs are at full capacity, 100%, and are operating in transit mode.

- In East Kazakhstan region, the average filling of two large reservoirs is around 83%.

- In Abai region, Shulbinsk reservoir is filled to 40%.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan explained that reservoir filling is part of the process of discharging floodwaters. To prevent river levels from rising and towns from being flooded, water is collected in reservoirs. Excess water is then released back into rivers or canals in safe amounts. Therefore, 100% reservoir filling does not imply that the reservoir cannot accept more water or that there is a risk of flooding. The water collected in reservoirs is used in agriculture, industry, and to support local ecosystems.

The department emphasized that round-the-clock monitoring and surveillance of the water management situation at reservoirs by specialists from "Kazvodkhoz" continue.
