Update on North Kazakhstan Floods: Peak Passed, Water Levels Receding

Press Secretary of the Department of Emergency Situations (DES) of the North Kazakhstan Region, Evgeny Zhuravlev, announced during a briefing on April 30th that the peak of the flood in Petropavlovsk had recently passed. He also provided an update on the situation in the region.

According to Evgeny Zhuravlev, the situation in the region remains stable. The Serpukhov Reservoir is filled to 129% capacity with an overflow of 1.65 meters. A decrease of 10 cm per day has been recorded. Water levels are slowly receding. Additionally, a consistent decrease in water levels is observed throughout the region, from the upper to lower reaches of the Esil River to the Russian border. For example, at the hydrological station in the village of Pokrovka, the water level dropped by 28 cm in a day, in the village of Novonikolskoye it decreased by 26 cm, and in Petropavlovsk by 19 cm, informed the DES SKO press secretary.

He noted that the peak of the flood in Petropavlovsk had only recently passed. According to the Kazhydromet forecast, no new flooding has been recorded or is expected. A steady decline in water levels across the entire region is projected from May 1st. Currently, water has receded from 312 homes, while 3586 homes remain flooded, with 760 courtyards affected. The number of evacuees remains unchanged at 13,624 people, including 3396 children. Temporary accommodation centers are hosting 906 individuals, including 159 children, while the rest are staying with relatives, Zhuravlev added.

He mentioned that comfortable conditions have been created at the temporary accommodation centers for the evacuees. Medical and psychological support is being provided to the affected individuals. Local authorities are paying close attention to the victims to ensure that no one is left to deal with their hardship alone.

On April 29th, it was reported which regions in Kazakhstan had passed the peak of the floods in 2024. Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy approved the Rules for compensating property losses incurred by small and medium-sized businesses as a result of the consequences of the 2024 floods on April 22, 2024.
