In the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) of Kazakhstan today, on May 6, 2024, they reported on the situation at the country's reservoirs and listed the regions where the peak of flooding has not yet passed.
According to the information, flooding continues in four regions of the country:
- In the West Kazakhstan region, four large reservoirs are filled to 92%. They are all operating normally. The second wave of flooding in the region is ongoing. The water level of the Zhaiyk River (Ural) in Uralsk is 786 cm. It has decreased by 6 cm in the past day.
- In the North Kazakhstan region, two large reservoirs are at 100% capacity. The second wave of flooding on the Esil River continues. The water level of the Esil River in Petropavlovsk is 1141 cm. It has decreased by 21 cm in the past day.
- In the East Kazakhstan region, the average filling of two large reservoirs is 83%. Flooding in the region is ongoing.
- In the Abai region, the Shulbinskoye reservoir is filled to 43.1%. Flooding continues in the region. Due to the increase in lateral tributaries to the Shulbinskoye reservoir, discharges into the Irtysh River continue. All reservoirs of the Irtysh cascade are operating normally.
The ministry's data shows that the peak flooding has already passed in four regions of the republic:
- In the Aktobe region, the average filling of two large reservoirs is 96%. Both facilities are operating normally. The peak of flooding has passed.
- In the Akmola region, two large reservoirs are at full capacity. Both facilities are operating normally. The peak of flooding has passed. 4.32 million cubic meters of water per day is discharged from the protective dam of Astana into the Esil River.
- In the Karaganda region, three large reservoirs are at 99% capacity. All of them are operating normally. The peak of flooding has passed.
- In the Kostanay region, the average filling of two large reservoirs is 92%. Both facilities are operating normally. The peak of flooding in the region has passed.
"The duty and monitoring of the water management situation at the reservoirs continue by specialists of Kazvodkhoz. The water collected in the reservoirs is directed for use in agriculture and industry."
Earlier, it was reported that 49,945 Kazakhstanis have returned to their homes after the start of the floods. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, a total of 8,958 residential buildings and 2,994 courtyard areas have been drained and pumped out across the country.
