Massive Dam Completed in Atyrau Region Amid Flooding Crisis

On May 7, 2024, a representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MЧС), Askar Sharip, reported that construction work on a 345 km long dam has been completed in the city of Atyrau and Kurmangazinsky district of the Atyrau region.

In the Atyrau region, continuous monitoring of the water level of the Zhayyk River is ongoing, along with the pumping of water from flooded houses, the spokesperson announced during a briefing at the State Crisis Center (СЦК).

In the North Kazakhstan region, rescuers are assisting residents of the village of Prirechnoye in the Kyzylzhar district by delivering food supplies. Teams and resources from the Department of Emergency Situations (ДЧС) of the Kostanay region have begun flood prevention work in the Podgora microdistrict of Petropavlovsk city.

Across the country, water has been drained and pumped out from 9660 residential buildings and 3213 yards. A total of 16.4 million cubic meters of meltwater have been pumped out. 50,670 people have returned to their homes, while 5436 individuals remain in temporary accommodation centers.
