Emergency Update: Rising Water Levels in Atyrau Region Amidst Flooding Crisis

The Emergency Headquarters of the Atyrau Region provided an update on the water level in the Ural River as of 20:00 on May 7, 2024.

Changes in water levels over the past day are as follows:

  • Village of Inderbor: water level rose by 17 cm. The current water level is 939 cm, with a critical level at 845 cm.
  • Village of Makhambet: water rose by 8 cm. The current water level is 886 cm, with a critical level at 850 cm.
  • City of Atyrau: an increase of 5 cm in water level. The current water level is 510 cm, with a critical level at 550 cm.
  • Village of Zhanatalap: water level rose by 2 cm. The current water level is 365 cm, with a critical level at 500 cm.
  • Village of Erkinkala: water rose by 2 cm. The current water level is 325 cm, with a critical level at 450 cm.

The Emergency Headquarters noted that rescuers are on round-the-clock duty on the river, and emergency posts have been set up in populated areas.

"Round-the-clock duty has been in place since May 4. The task of the duty officers is to monitor and report on water levels to the authorities and observe the condition of the dams. The duty team has been provided with necessary specialized equipment, boots, and flashlights in case of river overflow," said Coordinator Abil Taufikhuly of sectors 26-30.

Earlier, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported that 50,467 Kazakhstanis have returned to their homes after the onset of flooding. 5,447 people remain in temporary accommodation centers.
