Safety Initiative: Kazakhstan's Minister Implements SOS Button System for Tourists

in News / Kazakhstan - by

Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ermek Marzhikpaev, during a government meeting on May 14, shared plans aimed at ensuring the safety of tourists in the country.

He emphasized the importance of local executive bodies taking measures to prevent accidents on water bodies, enhance safety in water reservoirs and mountainous areas. The Ministry is currently working on the implementation of a safety system called the "SOS button for tourists," designed to operate in areas without internet coverage. This system is a domestic development, according to the Minister.

Marzhikpaev highlighted the pressing need for such measures, citing the unfortunate incidents that have occurred, including cases where tourists were unable to call for help. The SOS button will function in internet dead zones, utilizing satellite technology. The Minister mentioned collaborating closely with several domestic developers to ensure the success of this initiative.

The plan involves installing these SOS buttons in visitor centers, particularly in the 12 national parks across the country, with a total of 17 visitor centers planned to be operational soon. The goal is to have approximately 5000 SOS buttons deployed by the end of this year. Marzhikpaev mentioned that the cost aspect is significant and involves multiple suppliers with their respective technologies.

The Minister emphasized the reliance on satellite communication in areas without internet coverage, underscoring the advantages of the SOS button system. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance the safety and security of tourists exploring various remote and potentially risky locations across Kazakhstan.
