Former Police Officers Sentenced in Taldykorgan for Torture During January Events

In Taldykorgan, former police officers have been convicted for acts of torture during the January events. According to the Prosecutor's Office of Zhetysusky Region, on March 18, 2024, a verdict was reached in court against four former police officers for torture during the January events (Article 146 of the Criminal Code).

The criminal case was investigated by special prosecutors of Zhetysu Region. State prosecutors have proven that the individuals in question used prohibited investigation methods accompanied by physical violence in the building of the Department of Police of Almaty Region from January 5 to 16, 2022.

As a result of the unlawful actions, seven victims suffered various degrees of bodily harm. The court sentenced three of the defendants to imprisonment ranging from four to six years, while one of them received a non-custodial sentence. Additionally, the court stripped them of their special titles and the right to work in public service.

It is noted that the verdict is not yet final. Previously, it was reported that a cache of weapons stolen during the January events was found in Almaty. On January 24, 2024, the National Security Committee in Almaty discovered a stash with an arsenal of weapons.
