Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan, Nurlan Baybazarov, revealed on March 5, 2024, the government's readiness with reserve funds in case of a devastating earthquake in Almaty. Following a strong earthquake on March 4, the city's situation remains under government control.

Baybazarov emphasized the existence of an annual reserve fund primarily aimed at addressing the aftermath of technological accidents and other disasters. He expressed hope that such a scenario would not occur in Almaty. Currently, the local authorities are conducting audits to assess damages. If additional support from the national budget is required, the government's reserve will contribute to the restoration of buildings.

Highlighting Almaty's significance as a financial hub and a major asset of the country, Baybazarov acknowledged the city's contribution to the national budget. Despite the challenges posed by the recent earthquake, the city remains a substantial asset for Kazakhstan.

The earthquake on March 4, 2024, with significant tremors measuring 5 on the Richter scale, struck Almaty at 11:22. Subsequently, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported 156 inquiries regarding damages to social facilities and residential buildings.
