Qarmet Reacts Swiftly to Gas Leak at Lenin Mine in Shakhtinsk

in National Security / Kazakhstan - by

An emergency situation occurred at the Lenin Mine in Shakhtinsk. On March 22, 2024, a ventilation system test led to an increase in carbon dioxide levels. Qarmet's press service reported the incident on the Central Conveyor Slope D6, at a depth of 170 meters.

Following safety protocols, the mining brigade was promptly evacuated, with 70 workers brought to the surface without any issues. Qarmet's management, emergency response teams, and regional civil defense personnel were on-site to manage the situation. The preliminary cause of the incident was attributed to the ventilation system equipment test.

Qarmet clarified that these tests were part of a broader safety audit and workplace conditions improvement initiative. This incident follows a previous one on November 3, 2022, when a methane outburst during gas drainage drilling led to casualties at the same mine. As legal proceedings begin regarding the 2022 incident, Qarmet remains committed to enhancing safety measures for its workers.
