in National Security / Kazakhstan - by

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) reported on the avalanche situation in the mountains of Almaty and the Almaty region. Due to heavy snowfall, thawing, and unstable snow conditions, spontaneous snow avalanches occurred in the Ile Alatau mountains.

On March 22, snow accumulation in the mountains reached up to 22 cm, leading to significant snow slides. Five avalanche incidents were recorded, totaling 404,400 cubic meters, with the largest one in the Kotyrbulak river basin at 400,000 cubic meters of snow.

On March 23, 15 cases of spontaneous snow avalanches were registered, totaling 184,000 cubic meters, with the largest in the Turgensky gorge at 45,000 cubic meters of snow. The following day, 16 avalanches were documented, totaling 79,300 cubic meters, with the largest in the Kokzhaiylyau area at 50,000 cubic meters.

The MChS of Kazakhstan issued recommendations to restrict access to avalanche-prone areas, distribute brochures, send notifications, and conduct regular patrols and inspections of hazardous areas. They strongly advise against mountain trips in the coming days due to high avalanche risk.
