Border Contraband Bust: Billion Tenge Cigarette Smuggling Foiled

in National Security / Kazakhstan - by

A significant amount of tobacco products (cigarettes) worth over a billion tenge was intercepted at the "Aysha Bibi" border checkpoint on the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border on March 23, 2024, as revealed by the National Security Committee's press service.

The Committee's statement disclosed that the goods were disguised as food products and lacked accompanying documents during the inspection.

The confiscated shipment has been transferred to the Department of Economic Investigations for further scrutiny and legal proceedings.

This incident follows another major bust in early March 2024, where the National Security Committee announced the seizure of drug bags worth 540 million tenge in an underground laboratory in the capital city.

The authorities are actively combating illegal activities at the border, ensuring the security and integrity of the region.
