Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Lepeha discussed the potential removal of environmental checkpoints at the entrance to Almaty in the Senate on March 28th. He mentioned that the initiative to set up these checkpoints was taken by the city administration. Each checkpoint represents a patrol taken off public order duty. The Ministry of Interior Affairs approached the issue cautiously. Negotiations with the Almaty administration were held, with the latter insisting on the importance of these checkpoints for the city's ecology. As a result, the decision was made to keep them in place.
Earlier reports indicated that since December 2023, vehicles in Almaty violating toxicity and smoke emission norms have been identified in a pilot project. As of January 1, 2024, eco-checkpoints have been fully operational.
