Kazakhstan Authorities Expose Torture in Prison Facility

The official representative of the General Prosecutor's Office of Kazakhstan, Erlan Zhanpeisov, revealed details regarding the torture in Colony No. 62 in the Karaganda region.

Zhanpeisov highlighted that the pre-trial investigation into the torture committed by seven employees of the institution and four servicemen from the National Guard has been completed. A total of 11 individuals were involved in discriminating against and using violence towards 11 inmates in the facility.

During the investigation, preventive measures were taken against the suspects, and they were temporarily suspended from their positions. According to Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code, certain information is not subject to disclosure.

In accordance with the Constitution of Kazakhstan and the Criminal Procedure Code, every person is considered innocent until proven guilty by a court verdict. On March 17, 2023, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law aimed at preventing torture and improving the rights of prisoners.

The introduced changes are designed to enhance human rights protection, improve the conditions of prisoners, ensure their safety, and provide opportunities for correction and social rehabilitation.
