The National Security Committee (KNB) of Kazakhstan announced the detention of individuals suspected of propagating terrorism ideas in Shymkent.
On March 6, 2024, KNB officers, in coordination with the prosecutor's office and police, apprehended two residents for allegedly spreading terrorism propaganda through social media. According to the investigation, one of the detainees had traveled abroad where he might have been influenced by radical religious ideology.
The KNB stated that a pre-trial investigation is underway under Article 256, Part 2 ("Propaganda of terrorism or public calls for terrorism") of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan. Further details are not disclosed under Article 201, Part 1 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Kazakhstan. This is not the first incident of Shymkent residents being detained for terrorism propaganda.
On February 28, 2024, KNB officers, with the cooperation of the prosecutor's office and police, arrested another Shymkent resident suspected of spreading terrorism propaganda through social networks.
