Kazakhstan Government Amends Rules for Biometric Registration

in National Security / Kazakhstan - by

The Kazakhstan government has announced new regulations regarding biometric and genomic registration, set to take effect on April 1, 2024. The changes involve the gathering of biometric data from first-time applicants for identification documents or passports, as well as from foreign nationals and stateless persons over 16 years old. Additionally, the updated guidelines mandate consent for biometric registration from individuals aged 12 to 16 seeking passport services at Kazakh foreign missions.

The revised rules define the content of biometric records, which includes personal information, fingerprints, and unique identification numbers. This data is crucial for identity verification, population management, and national security enforcement. Individuals who have completed biometric registration may need to undergo re-registration in certain cases, such as alterations to their fingerprints.

The procedures for acquiring biometric data electronically or in hard copy have been specified, along with provisions for individuals exempt from biometric registration. These measures are designed to bolster security protocols and simplify identification processes within Kazakhstan.
