The official representative of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Moldir Abdyalieva, provided an update on the current situation of Kazakhstan's water reservoirs in relation to the floods. According to her, the two largest water reservoirs in the Akmola region are filled on average to 99%, operating in transit mode. The two largest water reservoirs in the Aktobe region are at 95% capacity. Overall, the reservoirs are functioning normally, with a decrease in water inflow.
Abdyalieva also mentioned that the average fill level of the five largest water reservoirs in the East Kazakhstan region is 62%, all operating normally. In the West Kazakhstan region, the four largest water reservoirs are filled on average to 59% and are also operating normally. Moving on to the Karaganda region, the average fill level of the four largest water reservoirs is 98%, with the flood having passed. In the Kostanay region, the two largest water reservoirs are at 95% capacity, experiencing high water levels.
In the North Kazakhstan region, the average fill level of the two largest water reservoirs is at 100%. Abdyalieva highlighted that the current water inflow into the reservoirs is the highest since 1980. Over 1000 personnel and 280 pieces of equipment are involved in monitoring and taking necessary measures at the water facilities.
She also mentioned the exchange of operational information between Kazakhstan and Russia regarding floodwaters and the operation of hydraulic structures. The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, is in constant communication with the head of the Federal Agency for Water Resources of Russia, Dmitry Kirillov, to ensure the smooth operation of hydraulic structures and address flood situations in the border regions of both countries.
On April 6, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed the people of Kazakhstan regarding the severe flood situation. He stated that all resources of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as well as the forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, National Guard, Armed Forces, and National Security Committee, are mobilized to combat the disaster. The local authorities of the affected regions are working around the clock, with the assistance of tens of thousands of volunteers on the ground.
Vice Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbaev visited Atyrau on a working visit earlier, where he chaired a meeting of the Operational Headquarters, announcing the declaration of a state of emergency in the city.
