Severe Flooding Threatens Northern Kazakhstan Regions

Deputy Akim of North Kazakhstan Region Kanat Duzelbayev stated that the Sergeyev Reservoir is filled to 163% capacity. He mentioned that there are no blockages along the Esil River. The overflow is currently at 355 cm, with the peak overflow yet to come.

In 2017, the overflow was at 338 cm. It is forecasted to reach up to 4 meters, posing a threat of flooding to 3 districts and the city of Petropavlovsk. This could affect 845 residential houses and 5,000 cottages. The expected arrival of significant water to the regional center is estimated to be within 7-8 days.

The most critical situation is in 8 out of 13 districts, with snow covering 38 to 50% of the area. There is a risk of flooding in 262 settlements, with 25 out of 38 houses already submerged. Approximately 100 people have been evacuated, with 36 able to return home. Additionally, 109 yards remain flooded.

In the region, there have been 48 instances of overflow on roads, with 36 still active. Seven road sections have been exposed, and water pumping operations are underway. Furthermore, 155 km of ditches have been cleared, 96.6 km of canals widened and deepened, 55,000 sandbags prepared, and 23,000 sandbags laid. A total of 540 personnel and 233 units of machinery are involved in these efforts.

Essential services are operating normally, according to the Deputy Akim of North Kazakhstan Region. Representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan also spoke at the briefing. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 15,000 police and National Guard personnel are serving in the flooded areas. The Committee for Civil Society Affairs of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan stated that over 378,000 tons of humanitarian aid have been collected nationwide.
