Massive Floods in Kazakhstan: Thousands Evacuated and Relief Efforts Underway

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan has provided an update on the current situation in flood-prone regions. As of 10:00 on April 10, 2024, 3,444 private residential houses and 336 yards in five regions – Atyrau, Aktobe, Akmola, Kostanay, and North Kazakhstan – remain flooded.

Additionally, there are 105 road washouts and 69 settlements cut off from transportation. Over 8.5 million cubic meters of meltwater have been pumped out. Water has been drained from 2,750 houses and 1,816 yards.

Since the beginning of the flood period, 96,472 people have been rescued, including 31,640 children. A total of 2,823 individuals, including 865 children, were rescued by air. Currently, 7,605 people, with 3,474 children among them, are in temporary shelters. 82,559 livestock have been moved to safety.

Senior officer Erasyl Saipash of the Civil Defense and Military Units Committee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations provided these updates during a briefing. He mentioned that 167,935 kg of humanitarian aid have been delivered to the affected regions. A total of 24,295 personnel, 2,655 pieces of equipment, 469 water pumping units, 139 boats, and 10 aircraft are involved in round-the-clock emergency and rescue operations.

Earlier, the Governor of North Kazakhstan Region, Gauyez Nurmukhambetov, addressed the residents regarding the flood situation. He highlighted a record overflow of 4.25 meters at the Sergeyevskoye Reservoir, surpassing the levels of the severe flooding in 2017. The rising waters pose a threat to settlements along the Esil River, with the regional center expected to be affected in a day or two. Villages like Pribrezhnoye, Teplichnoye, and the town of Zarechny are also at risk of flooding.
