Earthquake with Magnitude 5.3 Hits Southeast of Almaty, No Casualties Reported

On April 10th at 23:53, specialists from the Center for Seismic Monitoring and Emergency Forecasting (SOME) recorded a 5.3 magnitude earthquake 487 km southeast of Almaty. The epicenter was located in China and was classified as an aftershock.

The earthquake's energy class was measured at 11.6, with a MPV magnitude of 5.3. The coordinates of the epicenter were 41.71° N, 82.48° E, at a depth of 10 km. There were no reports of the earthquake being felt in Kazakhstan according to the MSK-64 scale.

Earlier on the same day, residents in Almaty reported feeling the tremors, with a magnitude of 2, while the Kegen and Raiymbek districts of the Almaty region experienced a magnitude of 3. This event marks the second significant earthquake in Almaty this year.

The first earthquake occurred on the night of January 23, 2024, with tremors reaching a magnitude of five, prompting authorities to hold accountable emergency response officials for any oversights during such events. The second earthquake took place on March 4, 2024, with sirens sounding throughout the city and a magnitude of 5.

Almaty is situated in a seismic zone with a rating of 9-10, highlighting the importance of individual preparedness for emergencies and the aftermath. Despite the recent seismic activity, no casualties have been reported, emphasizing the significance of readiness and response strategies in the face of natural disasters.
