Emergency Response in Atbasar, Kazakhstan as River Exceeds Critical Level

In Atbasar, Akmolinsk region, the water level of the Zhabay River has surpassed the critical mark, triggering the activation of the alert system in the city. According to the regional press service of the Department of Emergency Situations, on the night of April 11, 2024, there was an overflow on the embankment of the Zhabay River.

Immediate action was taken, and measures are being implemented to evacuate the population and safeguard buildings and residential houses. Local authorities are utilizing motor pumps to remove the excess meltwater. More than 400 people and 100 pieces of equipment from the state civil defense system are participating in the response efforts.

A video depicting the situation in one of the city streets was released by the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. The head of the Atbasar district, Amanbek Kalzhanov, urged residents to remain calm. He explained that due to a sudden rise in water levels, overflow occurred at six sections of the embankment, resulting in a critical state.

Residents residing in flood-prone areas are advised to vacate their homes as a state of emergency has been declared in the region. Evacuation centers have been established in the city, and support will be provided to those impacted. Amanbek Kalzhanov confirmed that an operational headquarters has been set up under his supervision to oversee the situation.
