The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) of the Republic of Kazakhstan announced on April 18, 2024, that floods in the country are currently ongoing in a stable but tense manner. The MES highlighted that emergency rescue operations, flood prevention measures, and flood aftermath cleanup are all still in progress in flood-prone areas.
Thanks to the implemented flood prevention measures, 18,651 people have returned to their homes. A total of 117,694 individuals, including 43,931 children, have been rescued or evacuated since the beginning of the floods. Furthermore, 113,852 livestock have been moved to safety. Currently, 6,887 individuals, including 3,166 children, remain in evacuation centers.
The MES reported that water has been drained from 4,216 residential buildings and 2,698 yards, over 10.1 million cubic meters of meltwater have been pumped out, and more than 3.2 million sandbags and 1.4 million tons of inert material have been laid down.
The MES's Center for Disaster Medicine psychologists are providing round-the-clock emergency psychological and informational support to residents in flood-prone regions, having received 1,932 calls on the hotline. Additionally, 4,164 individuals, including 1,630 children, have been rescued by air transport.
Humanitarian aid totaling 4,211 tons has been delivered to the affected regions by rail, road, and air. In various regions, including North Kazakhstan, Aktobe, West Kazakhstan, Akmola, and Kostanay, flood-related incidents have led to evacuations, with people being relocated to safer areas.
In total, 44,156 personnel, 4,611 units of equipment, 860 water pumping devices, 332 boats, and 18 civil defense aircraft are involved in round-the-clock emergency rescue and flood prevention operations, with volunteers also actively participating in the efforts.
