The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan has provided updates on flood situations in various regions. As of April 22, 2024, flood peaks are still present in East Kazakhstan and West Kazakhstan. Continuous monitoring of reservoirs is in place.
In the Akmola region, the Astana and Seletinsk reservoirs are at full capacity and functioning normally. In North Kazakhstan, significant flooding is ongoing with the Sergeyevsk reservoir experiencing an overflow height of 3.6 meters.
The water level of the Esil River in Petropavlovsk has decreased slightly to 1270 cm, with the region still under tense conditions. In Aktobe region, two major reservoirs are at 97% capacity and operating normally. In East Kazakhstan, major reservoirs are filled to around 81%.
In Abay region, the Shulbinsk reservoir is at 63% capacity with ongoing flooding, leading to environmental releases due to increased inflows. The Ertis cascade reservoirs are operating normally. In West Kazakhstan, four major reservoirs are at 86% capacity and functioning normally.
In the Karaganda region, three large reservoirs are at 98.5% capacity and operating as usual. In Kostanay region, two large reservoirs are at 92% capacity and operating normally. It was noted that the flood peak in West Kazakhstan is expected to be prolonged, prompting Vice Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbaev to instruct raising earth dams along rivers at risk of flooding by several meters.
