Kazakhstan's Nuclear Power Plant Construction Progress and Referendum Decision Pending

in National Security / Kazakhstan - by

In the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan on May 2, 2024, it was reported at what stage the issue of constructing a nuclear power plant (АЭС) stands.

It is worth noting that Kazakhstan has not yet held a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant.

"The construction of a nuclear power station is a long-term project. Forecasts of a deficit until 2035 persist, as consumption is expected to grow, the economy is expected to grow, GDP to double, which means a large volume of production. There is a plan - it includes the construction of large volumes of renewable and gas generation, including nuclear power plants. Therefore, this issue is still on the agenda. The timing of the referendum will be determined by the country's leadership. Currently, work is being done jointly with government agencies to explain the safety issue," Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yesimkhanov stated in the corridors of the Senate.

According to him, the ministry's position on the construction of a nuclear power plant remains unchanged.

On September 1, 2023, in his Address, the president stated that the question of building a nuclear power plant (АЭС) should be decided in a nationwide referendum. The date of the referendum is still unknown, but the Central Election Commission later announced that they are ready for the referendum.

The village of Ulken in the Almaty region was chosen as a potential location for the construction of the nuclear power plant (АЭС). However, it is still unknown who will be responsible for its construction. Meanwhile, disputes continue, and if the majority of the village residents are in favor of the construction, some experts and eco-activists see danger in it.
