Preparations for potential flooding are in full swing in Eastern Kazakhstan, with civil defense services in the region on high alert. Rescuers have urged residents to brace for snowmelt.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 50 military personnel from the 68303 MChS unit in Semey have been deployed to the region. They will be tasked with monitoring the situation and providing emergency response to floods in the Altai and Kurchum districts, which currently have the highest snow accumulation levels.
The message further states that around 200 raids have been conducted in flood-prone areas to ensure preparedness. The Department of Civil Defense and Emergencies of the East Kazakhstan Region advises residents to start preparing for the spring season by clearing snow from yards and drainage ditches to facilitate water runoff, and to have sandbags and inert materials on hand for reinforcement if needed.
Earlier reports indicated that flood monitoring is ongoing in the region. Local authorities have cleared 242 channels and ditches totaling 258.3 km, as well as 952 drainage structures and 202 bridges in preparation for potential flooding.
