Aerovisual Inspection Reveals Minimal Avalanche Threats in Almaty Mountains

On March 4, 2024, the "Kazselzashchita" of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted an aerovisual inspection in the mountains of Almaty, as reported by Zakon.kz. According to the Ministry, employees of "Kazselzashchita" flew over the river basins in the Central part of the Ile-Alatau ridge from the Kaskelen river basin to the Talgar river.

Preliminary results showed minor avalanches in the headwaters of the Kishi Almaty and Ulken Almaty river basins, with volumes of up to 300 cubic meters in the Talgar river basin. All avalanches stopped on the mountain slopes, and no significant avalanches were recorded. There were no threats to objects from snow avalanches.

The Ministry noted that the moraine lakes are in their winter mode, covered with snow and ice. No destruction on glaciers or ice on the lake waters was found. Water consumption is within the normal range, with no changes. Snow depth in the highlands is reported to be one meter or more. There were no visible signs of filtration on the lake bridges and in the lower reaches of the structures. No traces of landslides were identified.
