During a briefing on March 14th, Serik Sairov, the First Deputy Director General of the Republican State Enterprise "Kazhydromet," identified 10 regions in Kazakhstan where floods are anticipated. According to experts, a rise in temperatures by the end of March will lead to rapid snowmelt and the threat of flooding.
Particular attention is required for border regions with the Russian Federation, specifically along the Ural River and its tributaries, and the Tobol River basin. Currently, unfavorable flooding conditions have emerged in the Orenburg and Chelyabinsk regions, as well as the Republic of Bashkortostan, due to accumulated snowfall, as reported by Roshydromet.
Regions at high risk include Abay, Akmola, Aktobe, Almaty, East Kazakhstan, West Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, North Kazakhstan, and Zhetysu regions. Regions with moderate risk are Atyrau, Zhambyl, Kyzylorda, Pavlodar, Turkistan, and Ulytau. Mangystau region faces low risks. Hydrological monitoring is being conducted at 377 hydrological stations, with intensified observations during periods of sharp and dangerous water level fluctuations in rivers, Sairov explained.
On March 4, 2024, the Republican State Enterprise "Kazhydromet" released the main flood forecast for the year 2024.
