Divers Begin Cleaning Issyk-Kul Lake, Removing Illegal Fishing Nets

in News / Kyrgyzstan - by

Divers from the diving service center have started cleaning Lake Issyk-Kul from trash and illegal fishing nets, as reported by the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES).

According to the agency, the divers cleaned the lake shore in the Tuup Bay yesterday. In one day, they retrieved 4,100 meters of fishing nets from the water.

"Mostly new gear of poachers was extracted from the lake bottom. This indicates that poaching is still ongoing, despite being prohibited by law," noted the MES.

In 2023, divers have already removed 22,545 kilograms of various trash and 218,100 meters of fishing nets from the lake. This ongoing effort is crucial for preserving the unique ecosystem of Lake Issyk-Kul and combating illegal fishing practices.
