Municipality to Reclaim Land Illegally Occupied in Ataturk Park

in News / Kyrgyzstan - by

The municipality has clarified that any properties illegally built in Ataturk Park will be dealt with according to existing laws. This comes after rumors spread that the structures in the park will not be demolished. Mayor Aybek Junushaliev signed a resolution defining the boundaries of the 107-hectare Ataturk Park within the limits set by a 1992 resolution.

A total of 43 hectares of land allocated for construction must be returned to the park. The Department of Municipal Property Management, Land Use Control, and the October Administration have been tasked with reclaiming the park's land and dismantling any unauthorized structures. Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh, Dastan Bekeshev, confirmed that houses within Ataturk Park will not be demolished.

Established in 1957-1958, the park initially served as a dendrological park of the Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR. It was transferred to the city executive committee in 1962 and renamed the Park of Culture and Recreation "Friendship" in 1967, before receiving its current name in 1995. In the 1990s, construction began in parts of the park for residential purposes. The peak of construction occurred in the 2000s, leading to various scandals involving the sale of land in the park to high-ranking officials of Kyrgyzstan or their relatives for private housing.
