Supreme Court Upholds Ban on Rallies in Bishkek

in News / Kyrgyzstan - by

The Supreme Court has upheld the ban on rallies in Bishkek, as confirmed by its press service. The court recalled that the decision to restrict the location of peaceful assemblies was deemed lawful by the Pervomaisky Court following an application by the Pervomaisky district administration on March 28.

Lawyer Baktybek Zhumashev appealed this decision, but the appellate chamber of the Civil and Economic Affairs Collegium of the Bishkek City Court rejected the appeal, leaving the Pervomaisky district court's ruling unchanged.

Disagreeing with the court decisions, Zhumashev filed a cassation appeal seeking their cancellation. The Supreme Court's Civil and Economic Affairs Collegium upheld the previous court rulings on April 19.

It is important to note that rallies are prohibited in certain areas of Bishkek, including Ala-Too Square and the adjacent Erkindik Boulevard, among others. Exceptions are made for official state and municipal events held at Ala-Too Square.

Protests can still be held at Maxim Gorky Square, at the intersection of Ryskulov and Isanov Streets. The ban on rallies in central Bishkek has been in effect since March 2022.
