Release Imminent for Adakhan Madumarov of "Butun Kyrgyzstan" Party After Detention

in News / Kyrgyzstan - by

Adakhan Madumarov, the leader of the "Butun Kyrgyzstan" party, is set to be released from detention as the deadline for his imprisonment expires at midnight today.

Madumarov was arrested on September 2, 2023, on charges of state treason related to the 2009 protocol on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. He was later also accused of embezzlement for allegedly using $50,000 from the party's funds for personal purposes.

On March 26, 2024, the Pervomaysky District Court of Bishkek found Adakhan Madumarov guilty of state treason and embezzlement. However, due to the expiration of the statute of limitations, Madumarov was released from punishment. Despite this, as the precautionary measure was not changed, he remained in detention until today.

The next step lies with the Central Election Commission (CEC), which is expected to initiate the process of revoking Adakhan Madumarov's parliamentary mandate based on the court's decision. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that Madumarov's side did not appeal the verdict, effectively admitting guilt.
