Uzbekistan sees surge in labor migrants returning home amid economic challenges

in News / Uzbekistan - by

115,000 labor migrants have returned to Uzbekistan from abroad since the beginning of the year. This was announced during a meeting with the president on Friday, as reported by his press secretary Sherzod Asadov.

In January-March, 58,000 citizens returned, in April - 57,000, and it is expected that another 250-300,000 people will return by the end of the year.

The president emphasized that the issue of employment and income for the population is of paramount importance and warned leaders at all levels not to neglect this matter. It is crucial to provide employment opportunities for returnees from migration and assist them in addressing social problems.

Responsible leaders have been tasked with creating a unified information platform on migration and integrating it with the "mahalla seven" system to help compatriots working abroad who find themselves in difficult situations to find employment upon their return.

In late March, the press secretary of the Agency for External Labor Migration, Ortikhuzha Norov, informed that at that time, there were over 1 million labor migrants from Uzbekistan in Russia (over 2 million worldwide).

In the first quarter of 2024, the volume of cross-border money transfers to Uzbekistan increased by 8.6% - from $2.3 billion to $2.5 billion. This is higher than in the first quarter of 2022 ($1.46 billion) and 2021 ($1.41 billion). Russia's share decreased to 68% (compared to 78-87% in previous years).
